Chains rods and links

Chains, rods, poles, and links are the distance units of early American surveys. One chain is 66 feet and holds 100 links; one rod, also called a pole or perch, is 16.5 feet, so four rods make a chain; and 80 chains make a mile. Old descriptions state distances in these units, and plotting them means converting faithfully: a call of 12 chains is 792 feet.
