Public Land Survey System

The Public Land Survey System, or PLSS, is the rectangular system under which most land outside the original colonies and a few other states was divided. From an initial point, a principal meridian and baseline were extended, and the land was divided into townships six miles square, each subdivided into 36 sections of approximately 640 acres.
