Basis of bearings

The basis of bearings is the reference meridian a description’s directions are measured from: geodetic, astronomic, magnetic, or grid north. Two descriptions of the same land can state different bearings simply because their bases differ, and magnetic bearings drift over time with declination, so the basis and the survey date matter when comparing old and new descriptions.
